Chapter Seven

Standing just outside Evan’s office, Raleigh peeked around the door facing, and her heart skipped a beat. The purely feminine reaction to the sight of him sent a mixture of emotions swirling through her, making her all too aware that she was in love with him. Still, one part of her cowered from the possessive feeling, warning her not to depend on Evan too much. Nothing is forever, the little voice in her head cautioned. Don’t build castles in the sky.

A tender smile touched her mouth as she studied him, unnoticed. He was seated at his desk, his profile to her, as he thumbed through a thick file folder. The afternoon sun spilled in through the window, picking out the chestnut strands amid the darker brown mass of his hair. His feet were propped on his desk, his chair tipped precariously backward. The jacket of his navy-blue suit was draped over the back of the chair, and he’d rolled up the sleeves of his white dress shirt. His striped tie was askew, pulled to one side for more comfort. The desk radio blasted a top ten hit into the room, and one of Evan’s black loafers moved to the beat.

He pursed his lips in concentration and his dimples deepened. Raleigh took a deep breath as his attractiveness reached out to her. In her mind’s eye she could see him as he had looked yesterday morning when she’d awakened to find that he had left the bed and was standing by the window. The venetian blinds had been open causing thin bars of light to fall across his nude body. Then, as now, Raleigh had wanted to pinch herself. His body had the symmetry of those statues of Greek gods that depicted every woman’s fantasy of masculine grace. Sensing her intent scrutiny, he’d turned his head to look at her and his eyes had seemed uncommonly blue in the morning sunlight. He’d shifted his weight to one foot, making the sinewy muscles in his thigh and calf flex in a sensuous display and provoking a sexual longing in Raleigh that had made her frighteningly aware of how much she wanted him and how close she was to needing him in her life.

Blinking away the memory, Raleigh stepped into the office and rapped her knuckles on the open door. Evan jumped slightly, swinging his feet off his desk and rising to his feet. He smiled and dropped the folder to his desk, then unconsciously straightened his tie.

“Hello, beautiful.” He turned down the radio and held out his hands to her.

“Am I interrupting?” Raleigh asked, placing her hands in his and leaning over his desk to receive his quick, hard kiss. “I just thought I’d drop by for a coffee break.”

“I’m glad you did.” He glanced at his watch. “I thought you’d be through for the day. It’s after three.”

“I stopped by to talk to Cody about the story that appeared in the morning newspaper this weekend.”

“The one on the Rendell case?” Evan asked as he poured her a cup of coffee.
